Wanaka Cycle Trails
This is a very popular biking trip because every ride is through stunning lake and mountain scenery. Every trip you are aware of the force of Clutha River, NZ’s largest river. Each day’s ride is about 40kms, easy – medium level riding. Two cycling leaders give low key assistance and a back-up vehicle carries the lunches.
You will be on gravel tracks, and a good level of cycle fitness is required.
This trip also coincides with the Upper Clutha A&P show, the second largest in the South Island. On the last day (Saturday) we will go to the show for a few hours after we leave Zula Lodge.
Day One: We pick you up from the Leviathan at 8:30am, with optional pick-ups en route. We travel through beautiful Central Otago, including the famous vineyards, historic Clyde, and arrive in Wanaka for lunch. Those hiring, get fitted with their bikes; everyone explores Wanaka and we then ride 10kms along the edge of the stunning lake, past some lovely homes and partway along the Clutha to our accommodation at Zula Lodge.
Day Two: Starting with a Grade 1- 2 route to settle in, we follow the Hawea River up to Lake Hawea and beyond where we picnic on the shore at Johns Creek.
Day Two: A similar distance, this is a more challenging, Grade 2-3 route, but the scenery is even more spectacular if possible, with extensive views across to Rob Roy Glacier in Mt Aspiring National Park. We picnic and swim in Glendhu Bay and then return, via a coffee at the luxurious Edgewater Resort.
Day Three: A half day trip following the Clutha, from Zula Lodge to Luggate, then returning along the opposite bank. The route traverses terraces above the river, with wonderful views of the varied Clutha River landscape. The return to Zula Lodge for lunch offers the opportunity for alternative activities, including the 40 minute modest climb up Mt Iron with its 360 degree views of Central Otago - lakes, rivers, mountains and all. The transport and toy museum, Puzzle World or a more technical track – Deans Bank are all options for the afternoon, if you have any energy left.
Hire bikes will be picked up in Wanaka. Each bike will be adjusted to suit the rider, and named individually. You will be contacted closer to your trip, when we will request details about your height and hire payments etc. The bikes are very good quality and regularly serviced and will cost $176.00 for the four days. Helmets are included. Soft tail and E bikes are also available at a little extra cost.
For those with their own bikes we can transport them from Dunedin and back.
Breakfast each morning and lunches each day will be provided on the three day trips and we will have our four evening meals at Zula Lodge. Lunch on the first and last days are at your own cost.
