ABOUT:

The Lodge is located right on the edge of Fiordland National Park and World Heritage Area, and provides a unique opportunity to explore this magnificent area of bush and mountains.

While we are there, we will be self sufficient, involve ourselves in some superb day trips of varying grades, some quite demanding, some easy, and return each night to our comfortable lodge. As is usual with our lodge based trips all activities are optional. It is a good spot for a relaxed holiday for those who wish this.

The Lodge is situated 66km from Te Anau and 55km from Tuatapere, in Southern Fiordland, near Lake Monowai. Meals are varied and good wholesome food, prepared and cooked by the group. Accommodation is in modern bunkrooms and chalets. The kitchen and social rooms are well equipped, large and spacious, with power laid on. As happens so often on our trips, the social aspect is a great drawcard, and many friendships are formed while sharing some adventures in an “away from it all” environment.

It is essential that everyone has a good level of fitness and are well-equipped for what can often be very wet conditions as this will make the trip more enjoyable for you.

ITINERARY;

Day 1; Leave Dunedin by van at 9am, outside the Leviathan Hotel. We can pick people up along the route to Te Anau and can also pick up at Dunedin Airport (providing the flight arrives before 9am).

Day 2-4; A selection of day trips including;

Day 5; A new addition to the itinerary (in 2023) is a 3 hour cruise through the beautiful and very scenic Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound, with it's rugged peaks, verdant rainforest and twisting hidden inlets is a fiord three times longer than the Milford Sound and with a surface ten times larger it will simply take your breath away. Our day starts with a bus ride over Wilmot Pass through Fiordland's rainforest and into the sound. Bring your camera to get some shots of the spectacular scenery and wildlife that you may see, including bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and possibly even glimpse the rare Fiorldand Crested Penguin.

Day 6; Pack up and clean up. Our vans will drop you back to Dunedin late in the afternoon, and can drop people at the airport for flights after 6pm.

TRANSPORT AND FOOD;

Our vans leave from the Leviathan Hotel in Dunedin at 9am. We can pick you up enroute. If you choose to meet us at Borland there is no discount to the cost of the trip. Prices are all based on travel from Dunedin.

As on our other trips, we all help with the cooking etc, and the meals are just wonderful, because on this trip we can take in lots of fresh food. If you do have any special dietray requirements, please let the trip coordinator know well before the trip.

*We also ask that you bring a flask with you, for ease of hot water access for your cuppa and/or soup.

FEEDBACK;

Each day bought a new adventure and challenge. Thank goodness the wholesome meals gave us the fuel to get up and go the next day. Thanks to all the volunteers and punters on the trip. Well done!

Unique opportunity to experience the wilderness of country. Just magical and what a gift to have everything organised for us. A real treat to ‘go bush’ with OYAT/Milton Rotary Tramping team.

Fabulously organised days for trampers of all abilities. Milton Rotary Tramping Club you are an inspiration to all for your dedication and public spirit.

A real privilege to finally spend time in Fiordland – loved the forests, bush, the friendly people and the fact that you made it so easy to be here.
